The Course of Empire

Join us Friday, July 28 from 6 – 9 PM at Usable Space for the opening of The Course of Empire, a show of landscape-based work responding to the allegorical suite of paintings by Thomas Cole

The Course of Empire

In The Course of Empire (1833 - 1836), Thomas Cole described the rise and fall of a fictional civilization as an allegory for American society in the 19th century. The country faced unprecedented industrial and technological change, expansion, and internal conflicts that threatened its very survival. Despite Cole's warnings, our nation didn't spiral inevitably into a state of destruction. Cole himself might be surprised by the resilience of the nation, indeed civilization in general, a century-and-a-half later. Nearly 200 years on, our minds are occupied by related anxieties: climate change, political division, social instability, and scarceness of resources. Issues capable of making one feel locked into an equally hopeless sequence, perhaps living in the final stages of Cole's "The Consummation." Yet, many others remain more optimistic, believing we continue to reside in the Arcadian adolescence of our civilization. Which state in the cycle best represents where we are now? It depends on who you ask. The Course of Empire features artists who respond to that question, and offer through their work either a soothing reassurance, a skeptical reminder, or a foreboding warning about which stage we occupy in the allegorical narrative that Cole imagined early in the 19th century.

When we think of “environment” what do we think of? THE Environment? Or OUR Environment? Everything we create as humans is derived from materials whose sources originate in nature. When I use the word “Nature” I am referring to the world that exists free from human design. It creates itself according to laws undetermined by human beings. But are we actually part of nature? Is our existence the result of these natural laws? Has evolution itself evolved to include human activity as a factor in our development as a species?

Here in New York City, we are miles from any undeveloped land. Our “environment” is a colossal construction born from the imagination and the will of human endeavor. Our lives in this metropolis bear a constant reckoning of who we are and what we do. Now we also inhabit many places at once via cyber space. As we swim into the future are we abandoning and marginalizing our origins? Is our primal relationship to nature no longer part of our unconscious? Is “Nature” part of the past, or does it maintain a permanent place in our world? Is it lost, far away, or right around us?  Is it possible to conjure this relationship via human will? This is the purpose of art.

Let us explore in this exhibition how “design” from human craft interacts with what is “natural”. Where do humans respond to nature and where do we live counter to it? What role does nature play in our unconscious?  Where does beauty cross over between the worlds with and without humans?

Vanishing Point

From climate change to urban sprawl; from sunrises to supermoons; the landscape continues to captivate artists. No longer are we content with the romantic vistas of the Hudson River School or Paulus Potter cows. Contemporary artists have changed the portrayal of the landscape to incorporate conceptual, political and ecological concerns. Join us at Art House for a trek through the wilds of our vision of the world.
